On June 19, 1944, we were on station and following a Japanese task force. We maneuvered ahead of the force for a torpedo shot. We dove at sun up and waited for a large carrier (Shokaku) to come to us. Made ready six tubes forward and fired all six at 1600 yards. As soon as we fired, the escorts were on us with depth charges. We went to 350 feet. As the escorts tried to follow, we outmaneuvered them. Only the first few charges were close. They fell astern and kept getting farther away. We counted a total of 120 depth charges. Very lucky.

This was quite an experience, on our first run out.
